Nine Marks
of a Mission-Focused Congregation

What makes a congregation Strong? What are the outward signs of a healthy congregation? How does a congregation evaluate it's missional climate?

SED regionally deployed Mission and Ministry Facilitators have been working with congregations during the past five years to find answers to these questions. The result of their work and research has lead to the development of "Nine Marks for a Mission-Focused Congregation."

 Shared Vision

Clarity of mission that is widely owned by the members.

 Vital Spirituality

Fervent spirituality that is anchored in missional theology and becomes evident in passionate witnessing, prayer,study, and sharing.

 Healthy Relationships

A climate of love and acceptance that invites participation, welcomes the guest, and deals constructively with conflict and change.

 Celebrative Worship

A strong, lively proclamation of the Gospel through Word and Sacraments.

 Life-Changing Small Groups

Groups that model discipleship, caring, and growth.

 Relational Outreach

Outreach that is Christ-centered and need oriented.

 Gift-Oriented Ministry

Participation of laity and professional church workers in the shared ministry through gift strengths.

 Empowered Leadership

Leadership that is missional, innovative, and empowering.

 Enabling Structures

Structures and organization that support the mission and vision of the church.
